Messene Encounters 2026: A cultural journey to Ancient Messina

A unique cultural program titled “Messene Encounters 2026” will take place throughout August in Ancient Messene and at the Messene Park Amphitheatre, bringing together theatre, music, dance, poetry and historical references.

The program opens on Monday, August 17th, at 9:00 p.m., at the Ancient Theatre of Messene, with Aristophanes’ comedy “The Birds”, presented by the Messene Theatre Workshop.

On Thursday, August 20th, at 9:00 p.m., the program continues at the Messene Park Amphitheatre with the musical theatre performance “From Myth to Rebetiko, Stories of Passion and Fate.”

On Sunday, August 23rd, at 5:30 p.m., the action moves to the Gymnasium, Stadium and Palaestra (Fighting Place) of Ancient Messene, where the performance “Like Other Teenagers in Ancient Messene” will explore the lives and everyday experiences of young people in antiquity.

Tuesday, August 25, at 8:00 p.m., is dedicated to music, with the concert “Lyraulos, 3,000 Years of Greek Music”, presented at the Ancient Theatre of Ancient Messene.

On Wednesday, August 26th, at 9:15 p.m., the Messene Park Amphitheatre will host “My Homeland Is Now Memory,” a tribute to the poet Giorgos Markopoulos.

The series concludes on Friday, August 28th, at 9:15 p.m., at the Messene Park Amphitheatre, with a tribute to Petros Themelis, including a screening of the documentary “I Touched... I Loved... I Dug...”, directed by Babis Tsokas.

Messene Encounters 2026 is a cultural meeting point that brings together history, art and music, creating a dialogue between the past and the present. Set against the remarkable backdrop of Ancient Messene and the region’s cultural venues, the festival will offer audiences a diverse program of events and experiences.
