Elements of a Journey: Antoni Tàpies | James Scott | 2023, 60'

An experimental documentary focusing on the legacy of Antoni Tàpies, the 20th-century Catalan painter and sculptor. The film, which follows the artist as he comes of age under the Franco dictatorship, is intensely timely given today's divisive politics. It explores how artists navigate the complex journeys of their lives - intellectual, political and everyday. Tàpies stood out during his lifetime as a great painter and a voice of freedom and hope for an entire generation, as a dark and painful era unfolded in Spain. The film began shooting in 1974, but was interrupted due to a lack of funding. The original negatives were kept at the National Film Archive in London. Now, almost 50 years later, with the support of the Antoni Tàpies Foundation and the Elephant Trust, the film has finally been completed to be included in the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Tàpies' birth in 2023.
