Zeus released two eagles, one to the East and one to the West, and they met in Delphi, making this place the centre of the world. There, on the navel of Earth, as Delphi was called, is the place where the myth meets history...
According to tradition, in the Delphi area there was a sanctuary devoted to the female divinity of Gaia and the great dragon Python had been placed there as a guard. According to local myths, Apollo became the owner of the sanctuary when he killed Python. Then the god, transformed into a dolphin, moved to the Cretes region, who (the Cretes) founded his sanctuary.
From the 8th century BC century, the sanctuary of Delphi gained a particularly important role in the ancient Greek world, and its influence gradually spread over the wider area of the eastern Mediterranean. Due to the great prestige of the oracle, the Greek cities’ commanders or kings came to it in order to be helped when they had to make important decisions.
Nowadays, the ancient city remains defiant. The visitor has the opportunity to see the Temple of Apollo, the Archaeological Museum, the Ancient Theatre, the Kastalia fountain and many more sights.
