WHO IS ALI SAMI BEY
Photographer Ali Sami Bey was born in Turkey in 1870.In 1893 he published a book entitled 'Basic Principles of photography methods'. He participated as a photographer in the Greek-Turkish War of 1897. In 1898 he photographed the tour of Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II in the Holy Land and in 1900 the Shah of Persia in the Bosphorus. He was awarded a silver medal of Valor, The Order of Osmani and Mecidi D, as well as many decorations from the accompanying foreign Coroners. The blind loyalty to the sultan Abdul Χαμιντ B, however, was the one that gave him the title of “Chief fotographer and Follower of His Majesty the Sultan”!
Regardless the fame, Abdul Hamid is deposed a few years later as Ali Sami escapes to Egypt.
In 1913 he appears in Thessaloniki, where his former protector and then exiled Sultan had also settled. There he publishes The Daily ' Hak "'until the Asia Minor campaign when he returns to Turkey to fight against the regime of Kemal Ataturk.
With the departure of the Greeks in 1923, he returns to Thessaloniki and with Mount Athos, as his first station he begins, to travel all around Greece and take pictures. 1929 in Kalavryta, 1930 in Athens, and the 1932 he established a studio in Gargalianoi wearing alwways his worn military uniform with all the medals, he continues to sell photos for a living.
