"Maniatakeion Foundation"
The "Maniatakeion Foundation" is based in Athens. It was founded in 1995 by economist and businessman Dimitris Antonis Maniatakis and his wife, Eleni Tagonidis Maniatakis, with the aim of preserving the cultural heritage and promoting the development of Koroni.
The Foundation supports quality cultural events and actions while also participating in various associations with the aim of promoting research and development at a scientific and cultural level. It also organises seminars and conferences (in collaboration with the Municipality of Pylos-Nestor). Moreover, it awards prizes and grants to outstanding students and graduates of the municipality's senior high schools.
In April 2021, the "Maniatakeion Foundation" (in collaboration with the "Messenian Amphictyonia"), in the context of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, participated in the online lecture entitled: "The role of businessmen in the Revolution of 1821 and the birth of the Greek economy".
Also, since 2009, under the auspices of the Foundation, the "Sailing Club of Southern Greece" (I.O.N.E) has been organising a two-day offshore sailing event in the Messenian Gulf named "MANIATAKEION CUP". The race starts in Kalamata and ends in Koroni, while in the second race, the boats start from Koroni and finish in the city of Kalamata. The organisation's purpose is to highlight the historical Koroni and to support young people in actions that promote the spiritual and social life of the residents.
The "Maniatakeion Foundation" operates a lending library open to the public every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (11.00 a.m.-3.00 p.m.). The library catalogue is available online through a search form (on the website http://www.maniatakeion.gr) and the Argo portal (http://argo.ekt.gr) of the National Documentation Centre.
Finally, the Cultural Foundation houses Dimitris L. Maniatakis’ archive, established in September 2009. His archive covers the period from 1989 to the present and includes approximately 2000 documents, such as newspaper and magazine articles, photographic material, interviews, speeches, etc.
