Athens International Airport "El. Venizelos" began operating in March 2001, replacing the Hellinikon International Airport that served Athens for 60 years. It is 33 kilometres from the centre of Athens, and the airlines Aegean Airline, its subsidiary, Olympic Air, Ryanair and the Spanish company Volotea are based at the airport.
Athens International Airport has Hellenic Duty-Free shops, restaurant cafes, a post office, a mini market, a children's playground, a pharmacy, tourist offices, a first aid station, as well as short and long-term car parks.
In 2008, the airport received the "Golden Pillow" distinction from the newspaper "The Age" of Melbourne, while it was also honoured with the environmental award "Green Building" from the European Commission for the reduction of energy consumption.
Access to Athens International Airport by Metro is via Line 3 (Blue Line), while it is also connected via the Suburban Railway to Piraeus (via Larissa Station) and Ano Liosia. (For more information, call 14511). Finally, access to OASA buses is as follows:
