In the Messinian Mani, even today in some areas, salt is collected in the classic, traditional way.
In this area there are, due to its rocky peculiarity, the “platzes”, the natural cavities where the sea water turns into shimmering, white salt. They are filled with seawater which boils in the sun and less than half of it remains after the natural procedure. This water, which contains a very high salt content, is divided into smaller salt marshes and when the rest of the water evaporates, salt, pure and clean, after being collected, is spread on flat rocks to dry completely and be packed for home use.
