Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT
Spread the word
A minor car accident on a Tehran street seems, at first glance, completely insignificant. No one is seriously injured, the damage is minor, and everyone seems eager to continue their lives as if nothing happened. But the incident acts as a catalyst.
As the characters try to avoid responsibility, a web of lies, evasions and fears unfolds. Small everyday choices acquire political weight,t and the concept of “innocence” is constantly questioned. The accident is no longer an event, but an occasion to reveal a society that has learned to remain silent.
Jafar Panahi, with his characteristic simplicity and corrosive humour, creates a film that balances between comedy and drama. Through seemingly simple means, he illuminates the mechanisms of fear, complicity, and moral resignation, proving that nothing is ever “just an accident” in a film that won the Grand Prix at the recent Cannes Film Festival.
