Military Museum Of Kalamata
The Military Museum of Kalamata is located near the city’s historical centre. It is a two-storey neoclassical building (where the old Metropolis of Messenia was housed) under the command of the 4th Infantry Division. The museum was founded in 2005 and inaugurated on June 10th, 2006, and visitors here can see a rich collection of historical relics.
The museum aims to highlight modern Greek history from the Revolution of 1821 to the present day through texts, photographs and audiovisual material. The tour of the Military Museum begins with exhibits of uniforms and military and photographic material from the 1821 War. It continues with the Macedonian War, making particular reference to the Messenian Warriors that took part in the Macedonian Struggle. The Balkan Wars, the Asia Minor Disaster, the First and Second World Wars and the National Resistance follow. Also, reference is made to the peacekeeping missions of the Greek army (Korea, Somalia, former Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan).
Of particular interest is the book of the Messenian dead who fell heroically during the battles from 1897 to 1974. In this book, visitors can learn about the history of the local society. Also, in the specially designed "Sound and Light" room, a documentary shows the historical route of the 9th Infantry Regiment.
One of the most characteristic exhibits of the Military Museum is the evzone uniform, which is in the National Liberation Struggle showcase. This uniform has particular folklore symbols and was established as the official uniform of the fighters in 1836 by King Otto, who wore it in official celebrations. The museum also exhibits the personal belongings of Lieutenant General Nikitas Polychronopoulos, as well as the historical "Luger" pistol, which was manufactured in 1900 and had eight bullets.
For students’ school groups, the museum also has military museum equipment, the first to be created for a military history museum, intending to get to know the objects that are exhibited faster. The military museum set includes a bag with accessories, which the Greek soldiers use during their mission, a uniform and a briefcase with activities for children (paintings, constructions, questionnaires).
Finally, the exhibits in the museum's forecourt are awe-inspiring, including an M48-A5 tank, an M8 armoured vehicle, firearms, and an F-5 aircraft.
