Holy Apostles
The small church that you shall find in the historic center of the city is one of the most significant monuments in the history of the modern Greek state.
Built in the early 14th century by Emperor Andronikos, it originally had a smaller size but was expanded during the Venetian occupation.
The Church of Holy Apostles made history the morning of 23rd of March 1821. Kalamata has just got liberated and to the church go the pioneers of this liberation. They are those who later on became the heroes of nation’s revolution. In the first Doxology on free land are present, among others, Theodoros Kolokotronis, Petrombeis Mavromichalis, Papaflessas and Nikitaras, who they all, inside the church, swear for faith in revolution.
Ever since, each year on March 23rd, a doxology takes place in the church, as well as, a representation of that historic moment.
