Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-ANIMAL
Spread the word
Kalia is a dynamic dancer in a third-class Greek hotel that hosts tourists every summer, mainly from Russia and the Balkan countries. Kalia and her partners aim to find the right music and dance numbers to entertain the hotel's elite customers. As summer peaks and the pressure mounts, their nights turn violent, and Kalia's struggle is revealed in the dark. But when the lights come back on, the show must go on.
In her second film, after the unique PARK of 2016, Sofia Exarchos continues to walk the path of apt and poignant socio-political allegory. "Animal not only exemplarily scorches yet another aspect of the "Greek dream" but succeeds in becoming a solid allegory for capitalism and the crisis of the West.
This year's Golden Alexander was given to Sofia Exarchos, only the second time that the award goes to Greek hands, thirty years after the victory of Sotiris Goritsas for "From the Snow" and the Best Actress award for the sensational Dimitra Vlagkopoulos, which had also won the corresponding award at the Locarno festival.
The March Photography and Cinematography section will be held with the cooperation of the Kalamata Photographic Group.
