Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-VICTOR VICTORIA

Spread the word

1930, Paris. Victoria, a talented but unemployed soprano, is desperately trying to find work. When she finally does everything she can to no avail, Victoria, with the help of a singer and her good friend, disguises herself as a man and gets a job in a cabaret as… a man who imitates women! However, things will take an unexpected turn when she falls in love with an American gangster, unaware that the "homosexual Polish aristocrat" is actually female.
Victor/Victoria is a 1982 musical comedy film written and directed by Blake Edwards and starring Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Leslie Ann Warren, Alex Karas, and John Rhys-Davies. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released the film. Tony Adams produced it, and Henry Mancini wrote the music. Victor Victoria was adapted as a Broadway musical in 1995 and is essentially a remake of the 1933 German film Victor and Victoria.
A playful exploration of sexual identity and a Billy Wilder-esque, "disguised" commentary on reality and its disguise as spectacle is the excellent Victor Victoria. Julie Andrews is delightful, and the adapted musical score by Henry Mancini, who won one of the seven Oscars for which the film was nominated, is melodious.
