Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-My Dearest Friends
Spread the word

Completing half a century since its premiere in 1975, it is worth remembering why "My Most Honourable Friends" remains an iconic comedy, one that stays in the memory forever. Even a scene from it can light up like a flash in your mind and make your day. A film by Pietro Germi, but directed by the great Mario Monicelli, father of commedia all'italiana.
The film, although conceived by Pietro Germi, a renowned director ("Divorce Italian Style", "Ladies and Gentlemen", "Dishonoured and Abandoned"), was not completed in the studio, as he passed away on December 5th, 1974, at the age of 60.
Shortly before his fatal accident, Germi assigned the direction to his friend Mario Monicelli, who would deliver the comedy - a milestone for world cinema the following year.
In fact, he chose for the opening credits the label "a film by Pietro Germi", humbly conveying the moving message to all cinephiles and at the same time highlighting that an excellent comedy can limit the pain of loss.
"My Most Honourable Friends", however, is not only a hilarious comedy, with its social bitterness, unforgettable funny scenes, and unsurpassed lines. It is also the bittersweet memory of other times, when directors were ready to fight for their beliefs, their artistic concerns, but also the anxieties of the people. And of course, of an era when cinemas - summer and winter - were meeting places, an open embrace for all cinema lovers that we are invited to experience again, 50 years later.
