Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-Kneecap
Spread the word
In Belfast in the 2010s, after the "Troubles", a restless, enthusiastic and perpetually goal-oriented rap trio emerges, "Kneecap". The band consists of an Irish teacher and two small-time drug dealers and will quickly become the loudest heralds of the revival of the Irish language and the fight against the (English) establishment.
Fully supported by the lively direction of Rich Peppiat, who takes full advantage of the enthusiasm and uniqueness of his actors with no previous acting experience (and real musicians in the band), the film may be laced with several doses of (various) drugs and sex, but at its core, and through the music, it is a hymn to Identity and Will. Gaelic constantly holds the conductor's baton, and the film is full of anthology scenes, similar to what we encountered almost thirty years ago in the "relative" "Trainspotting".
The film has been nominated in many categories for all the year's major awards (BAFTA, IFTA, European Film Awards, etc.). Among its 19 already won awards is the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival 2024! Finally, the band will visit our country in the summer as part of the Rockwave Festival with Cypress Hill.
