Jim Wormold is a British vacuum cleaner salesman living in Havana, an ordinary man struggling financially while trying to satisfy the expensive tastes of his teenage daughter. When the British Secret Service offers him a position as an intelligence agent, he accepts, driven more by financial necessity than patriotism.
Lacking any real spies to recruit, Wormold invents an entire network of imaginary agents and begins sending fabricated intelligence reports back to London. To his astonishment, the bureaucracy of the intelligence service takes his fictitious reports completely seriously, and, before long, he finds himself caught in a world far more dangerous than anything he had imagined.
Director Carol Reed adapts Graham Greene's celebrated novel into a sophisticated espionage satire, with Alec Guinness delivering a masterful performance that perfectly balances awkwardness, wit, and quiet intelligence. The result is a sharp black comedy about Cold War paranoia, the commercialisation of intelligence, and the absurdity of bureaucratic power.
