Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-MY FAIR LADY
Spread the word
An arrogant scholar of English orthography "undertakes" to reform into a presentable aristocrat, a poor London flower girl whose voice and articulation can lead even non-British people to complete repulsion.
Based on the Broadway musical by Alan J. Lerner (lyrics, screenplay) and Frédéric Levé (music), "My Fair Lady" is more than a celebration of the old-fashioned cinema of incredible glamour and stage direction; it's a celebration of the English language, the excellent poetry, irresistibly infectious music, speech and orthophony. It's also given a fine story, almost proto-feminist, interspersed with anthology scenes for their time and beyond: I Could Have Danced All Night, The Rain in Spain, the first meeting, Hepburn airing her grievances, Harrison's fantastic house on the whole – the epitome of set design – every Harrison-Hepburn confrontation, the great Cecil Beaton's costumes, Wouldn't it be Lovely among the flowers, the first party in the black and white dress. What to remember first!
With 12 Oscar nominations (and yet not for Hepburn!!!), eight awards and a triumphant box office, My Fair Lady is a film that defined the era of the generation that first enjoyed it. Acclaimed as one of the greatest musicals of all time (on stage and screen) and recognised as one of cinema's most classic romances, it is an undeniably grand visual spectacle of the 60s.
