Filmhouse/New Film Club of Kalamata-THE FORBIDDEN BIKE
Spread the word
"...I believe that films are fun and they transport you for two hours to a place you can never imagine. This happened to me when I was a child, so I saw the world in my living room, in that small town that doesn't even exist on the map." Haifaa al-Mansour has said in an interview that such a journey into the world is offered to the viewer with the film "The Forbidden Bicycle (Wadjda)".
Al-Mansour, the first female Saudi Arabian director to make a feature film, elegantly reveals the obstacles faced by all women in modern Arab society through the story of an 11-year-old who wanted to buy a bicycle and ride it, even though women are not allowed to. Like the film’s director, Wadjda, she finds a way to circumvent the restrictions in the process, with inventiveness and vibrancy.
Told simply but with caustic humour and sharp insight, “The Forbidden Bicycle (Wadjda)” is at once a quietly subversive and charming film.
The film has won numerous awards at film festivals worldwide.
