Le Corniaud (1965)
The naïve Antoine Maréchal is about to leave for his vacation when his small car is destroyed in a collision with the Rolls-Royce of wealthy businessman Léopold Saroyan. As compensation, Saroyan offers him an irresistible deal: drive a luxurious Cadillac from Italy to France, with all expenses paid.
What Antoine does not realise is that the Cadillac is packed with smuggled valuables, and that his seemingly generous benefactor is using him as an unsuspecting courier. What follows is a fast-paced road comedy filled with misunderstandings, car chases, unexpected detours, and a constant clash between cunning and innocence.
Director Gérard Oury makes brilliant use of the legendary comic pairing of Bourvil and Louis de Funès. Bourvil's calm, kind-hearted innocence perfectly complements de Funès' frantic, explosive, and manipulative energy, creating one of the most beloved French comedy duos of the 1960s.
Le Corniaud became one of the greatest box-office successes in French cinema during the decade, attracting millions of viewers and enjoying lasting popularity through television broadcasts and theatrical re-releases. The collaboration between Bourvil and Louis de Funès proved unforgettable, combining two completely different comic styles in a road movie packed with hilarious misunderstandings, physical comedy, and timeless popular charm.
