The daughter of a German war criminal is recruited by American authorities to infiltrate a group of Nazis who have taken refuge in Rio de Janeiro. She falls in love with the agent who has lured her into this risky game, but to be convincing, she must stay away from him and marry a Nazi.
A love story and a spy story expertly intersect, as does the humorous lightness with the perfectly timed suspense (the party scene with the key is unsurpassed). Careful in every detail, with disciplined yet "fluid" direction, pervasive eroticism, a delightful lead duo and stylish supporting roles, "Notorious" emerges as perhaps Hitchcock's best black-and-white moment and one of the most stylish works of his filmography.
The film participated in the Cannes Film Festival in 1946 and was nominated for Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Claude Rains) and Original Screenplay (Ben Hecht). In 2006, the US Library of Congress selected it as part of the National Motion Picture Registry. Time magazine critics Richard Corliss and Richard Sickel included the film in their list of the 100 greatest movies of all time.
