Media, society and criminal law in the face of gender based violence

How many more will be labeled “family tragedies”?
How many more will be presented as “crimes of passion”?
No.
They were and are femicides.
In a society that continues to produce and conceal gender based violence, we insist on opening this discussion publicly. We insist on the word. We insist on responsibility. We insist on justice.
As part of the campaign to highlight femicide as a distinct crime with social roots and institutional responsibilities, we are organizing a public event and discussion:
“Femicide: A Word at Stake”
Media, society, and criminal law in the face of gender based violence.
We will discuss:
• The importance of documentation and visibility (FEMICIDE).
• The role of the media in reproducing a culture of sexism (presentation by Stella Kapsampeli: “Gender based violence and femicide, social and media dimensions of a culture of sexism”).
• The significance of the term in criminal law and the struggles taking place in courtrooms (Dimitra Keramyda & Chrysanthi Kaouni).
An open discussion will follow.
