The Creative Documentary Centre of Kalamata is pleased to invite you to a special Halloween event on Sunday, March 10th, 2024. They will host Vangelis Kotsou, who will present a programme of Halloween folk and traditional mock songs, together with Panagiotis Kotsonis from Nafplio on the violin and Giorgos Kladis on percussion.
The event will occur outside the Centre's hall on the pedestrian street of Koutsomitopoulou. The programme will start at noon, and they will be waiting for you with wine, tsipouro and appetisers to enjoy our distinguished guests.
Mock Halloween songs, with roots in the ancient Dionysian festivals, are an integral part of the Greek folk tradition, connected to the custom of revelry, entertainment and "masquerade". They are characterised by liberating language and a satirical spirit, mocking individual imperfections or criticising socio-political issues. Their origins can be traced back to ancient poetry, continuing the tradition of satirical poems, while their didactic intent judges good and evil, leading to the correction of bad habits. The use of allegories lends depth and hidden meanings, while their cheerful atmosphere combines humour and a critical eye. Associated with the fasting of Lent, mock songs carry obscene content as a contrast to the season's severity. Overall, they are a unique part of the Greek tradition.
