Efklis: Crossing the Noupanti or Foneas gorge
Spread the word

Nature enthusiasts from the "Efklis" Kalamata Hiking and Mountaineering Association will set out to explore the Noupantis (or Foneas) Gorge in the Messenian Mani, an impressive, wild, and rugged canyon renowned for its spectacular rock formations and caves.
The Noupantis Gorge begins near the Vaidenitsa Monastery, about 3 km beyond the village of Saidona. The group will approach the gorge from the mountain village of Saidona, following a well-preserved traditional stone-paved path. After about 30 minutes, they will reach the gorge's riverbed, surrounded by the fragrant aromas of wild mint, sage, and thyme.
The Messenian Mani is crossed by four major gorges: Vyros, Rintomo, Noupantis, and Tepeni. The club has hiked the first three many times. Now it is time to explore Noupantis Gorge, also known as Foneas Gorge. The hike concludes at Foneas Beach, famous for its white pebbles, crystal-clear waters, and the striking rock rising from the middle of the bay, dividing it into two sections.
