Hiking in western Mani: Kardamyli–Malta–Kampos
Spread the word
The Kalamata Mountaineering Association bids farewell to 2025 by organising a unique nature and culture hike on Sunday, December 14th, in western Mani.
Starting from Kardamyli and via a paved path that formerly connected Mani with Kalamata (recently cleared by our Association), we will "get lost" in sage, aspalathus, olive and kumari trees, passing the Velona area with a spectacular view of the sea, the picturesque settlement of Malta and after touring the ruins of the medieval castle of Zarnata we will reach the village of Kampos where we will have the opportunity to visit the Mycenaean vaulted tomb of Homeric Machaon, a famous physician of antiquity, who was the son of Asclepius and participated in the Trojan War.
Near Machaon's tomb, we will also find the tower house of the 10-time Prime Minister of Greece, Alexandros Koumoundouros.
Difficulty level: 1 (easy, at least basic physical condition required).
Walking hours: 6-7
Departure: 7:30 am on Sunday, 14/12/2025, from the club's offices.
Information & registration: Kleidonas Giorgos, 6983519455.
