Agia Sofia Kynourias – Cave of Saint Savvas – Elaiochori
The hiking group Companions in NATURE invites nature lovers to explore one of the lesser known mountain treasures of northern Kynouria, the picturesque village of Agia Sofia. The excursion follows lush, historic paths through the rich landscape of Arcadian land, combining natural beauty with elements of local tradition and history.
Participants will hike along the famous “Path of Mana”, leading toward the Cave of Saint Savvas, and continue along the old cobblestone trail that once connected the village of Agia Sofia with Elaiochori. The area is known as the village of coopers, lime kilns and watermills, a place where human presence has long coexisted with the striking natural scenery of Arcadia.
Along the way, hikers will follow the route once taken daily by the ancestors of Agia Sofia as they traveled to the spring known as “Mana”. The path passes through a dense ravine filled with evergreen oaks, oak trees and plane trees, crossing an old stone bridge and reaching the historic stone spring. From there the landscape unfolds through locations known locally as Koumaria, Fleva and Lazo, before the trail continues deeper into the green valley.
The hike begins in the village of Agia Sofia and concludes in Elaiochori, offering a rewarding journey through one of the most beautiful and lesser explored corners of the region.
As is customary for the group, the day will conclude with a meal at a local tavern in the area, giving participants the chance to relax and enjoy traditional food after the hike.
