Companions in NATURE-Bulgaria

Lakes, rivers, mountain streams, and majestic peaks, including Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans at 2,925 metres, create a breathtaking landscape of vast alpine beauty.

The region is home to ancient natural fir forests, while its remarkable variety of flora and fauna has earned it a place on the UN List of National Parks and within the NATURA 2000 ecological network. Approximately 1,400 plant species can be found here, including three species that are unique to the Rila region.

The National Park also provides shelter to the brown bear, Balkan chamois, European souslik, the rare Alpine newt, and more than 100 species of birds. It is also home to a remarkable diversity of invertebrates, accounting for around 80% of the invertebrate species recorded in Bulgaria.

The mountain range is dotted with approximately 120 natural lakes, most of them of glacial origin. In one of the most beautiful areas of the region, the group will enjoy a hike among the spectacular Seven Rila Lakes, each with its own distinctive name and character: the Upper Fish Lake, Salzata (The Tear), Okoto (The Eye), Babreka (The Kidney), Bliznaka (The Twin), Botanicheskoto, and Dolnoto, creating a truly fairytale-like landscape.

Rila is a favourite destination for hikers and nature lovers from all over the world, offering an unforgettable experience amid pristine alpine scenery.

Sofia

Sofia is a city of imposing monuments, where the spirit of the Balkans remains vibrant and authentic, while the pulse of modern Europe can be seen in its central neighbourhoods, spacious squares, and contemporary architecture.

Surrounded by extensive green spaces and situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. With a history spanning more than seven millennia, as evidenced by its numerous archaeological remains, it is considered one of the oldest cities in Europe.

The National Historical Museum is one of the richest museums in Eastern Europe, offering visitors a fascinating journey through Bulgaria’s long and complex history.

Sofia is also regarded as one of Europe’s greenest capitals. Borisova Garden, the city’s oldest park, is a wonderful example of this and is located close to the heart of the capital.
