The Geraneia Mountains are a mountain range that occupies the easternmost part of the prefecture of Corinthia and reaches the borders of Western Attica. The Geraneia massif rises north and east of Loutraki, north of Agioi Theodoroi and Kineta. It is a mountain known by a feminine name since antiquity: Geraneia or Geraneia, as mentioned by Thucydides and Pausanias. Its name is due, according to ancient tradition, to the cranes that led the Megaros to them to be saved during the flood of Deucalion. According to Pausanias, Gerania was the name of the land end of Megara, which looks like a crane's neck, as well as west of Megara. According to mythology, Theseus passed through Geraneia on his way to Athens, exterminating Faia in an area where today Agioi Theodoroi and Skironas at Skironides stones, today's Kakia Skala.
After the battle of Thermopylae, the Spartans blocked the ancient road of the Skironides with embankments and built the wall of the Isthmus of Corinth. When the Peloponnesian War broke out, the Corinthians camped here before marching to Megaride.
