Companions in NATURE-Megali Tourla Refuge/Malevi Monastery
Spread the word

There are mountains that captivate you with their wildness, and others, like Mount Parnon, that win you over with their primordial serenity and endless variations of colour. The ascent to Megali Tourla (1,935 m), its highest peak, is not simply a hiking route but a journey through one of the most beautiful ecosystems of the Peloponnese.
The adventure begins just below the mountain refuge at 1,420 metres. The trail starts inside a dense, shaded forest, and as we climb higher, the forest gradually thins out and the plateau of Kambos welcomes us. Here, the landscape changes character. The vegetation becomes lower, giving way to subalpine meadows and rare species of flora. It is the point where the mountain allows you to pause, look around, and feel the magnitude of the massif surrounding you.
The final ascent to Megali Tourla (also known as Kronio) requires a little… determination. The slope becomes steeper and the terrain "looser", but the anticipation of the view acts as fuel. Reaching the trigonometrical marker, the world unfolds beneath your feet. To the west, Mount Taygetus stands imposing with its sharp peaks. To the east, the blue waters of the Argolic Gulf and the Myrtoan Sea create a magical contrast with the green of the mountain. There, at 1,935 meters, you feel as though time has stopped.
To complete the experience, the return route is different from the ascent. We choose the trail that passes by the Prophet Elias Chapel and descends toward the Malevi Monastery.
