Three women, three stories, three intertwined destinies. This polyphonic novel explores the fate of the young Ramla, who is violently torn from her love to marry Safira's husband, while her sister Indu is forced to marry her cousin. Patience! This is the only advice that their surroundings give them, since it is unthinkable to oppose the will of Allah. As the proverb of the Pel tribe says: "At the end of patience, paradise awaits you." But paradise sometimes turns into hell. How will the three disobedient women manage to free themselves?
Forced marriage, marital rape, consensual sex and polygamy: this novel by Jaili Amadou Amal breaks taboos by revealing the place of women in the Sahel and giving us a subversive narrative about the universal issue of violence against women.
Jaili Amadou Amal was born in the northern part of Cameroon, belongs to the Pele tribe and is Muslim. Married at the age of seventeen, she has faced all the difficulties that women in the Sahel encounter. An unparalleled storyteller, she has been honoured with the Prix de la meilleure auteure africaine 2019 and the Prix Orange du livre en Afrique 2019. This novel is her first book published in France. It received the Goncourt Prize for high school students in 2020 and is an essential chapter in African literature.
