Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-SILENT WEDDING
Spread the word
In a small Romanian village in the 1950s, a young couple is preparing to celebrate their wedding. On the very same day, however, Stalin’s death is announced, and the state imposes national mourning: any form of entertainment is strictly prohibited. The wedding is not cancelled — it is simply transformed into an absurd ritual of silence.
The guests decide to continue the feast without music, without voices, without laughter. The table is laid, the wine flows, but every movement is done in whispers, every expression of joy is suppressed. Through this farcical setting, the film gradually unfolds a profound political allegory about totalitarianism, fear and hypocrisy that permeates everyday life.
Horatiu Malaele combines bitter humour with collective memory, transforming a historical event into a moving yet sarcastic denunciation of repression. Laughter is mixed with sadness, and silence becomes the most deafening form of resistance in a delirious film that reminds us of Kusturica at his best!
