The semi-mountainous village of Aristomenis is built at an altitude of 354 meters and has about 350 permanent residents. It is 23 km from Messina and 35 km from Kalamata. The village has a long history that follows the history of Messinia. In ancient times, the area of the settlement was part of Nestor’s kingdom, the king of ancient Pylos. From the period of the First Ottoman Empire, the village was called Mustafa Bassa, probably from the name of the pasha of the area. The current name of the village was given in 1871, as a tribute to hero Aristomenis (leader of the ancient Messinians during the Second Messinian War).
The visitor, here, can admire the traditional houses, as well as the buildings of the Primary School, Gymnasium (Junior High School) and Senior High School. The church of the village, Agios Ioannis the Theologian, is also of particular interest.
