"Oedipus the Tyrant" and "Oedipus at Colonus"-Single Performance

Spread the word

Sensational "OEDIPUS" is coming this summer, with Yannis Houvardas' signature and an unparalleled cast of the most important Greek actors.
Celebrating 50 years of continuous professional presence in the theatre, director Yannis Houvardas translates and directs "Oedipus the Tyrant" and "Oedipus at Colonus" in a single performance, indeed as one play.
A group of important actors and contributors, under the guidance of the experienced Greek director, and with live music, will tell the shocking story of Oedipus, starting from the end and returning to the beginning of evil. Oedipus and all his close relatives arrive - as described in "Oedipus at Colonus" - at a mysterious place scattered with funerary monuments, to learn through divine revelation the sacred "apocrypha (hidden)" that will give them the knowledge of why they lived such a tortured life. During this process, the characters relive - together with Oedipus himself - the basic scenes from "Oedipus the Tyrant" and approach the divine spirit as given in "Oedipus at Colonus", until the final elevation and ascension of Oedipus to the heavens.
The two works—very different in dramatic conception and style and written with a great time gap between them—are recognisable throughout the performance. They harmoniously convey the sense of a single story, faithful to the spirit of our leading ancient tragic poet, Sophocles.
