''Andromache'' by Euripides

Spread the word

We are transported far from the major centres, to the Greek countryside: Thessaly, Phthiotis, Thetideion. To the house of Achilles' son, Neoptolemus. The hero of the Iliad, on whom the victory of the Greeks at Troy was based, faces difficulties in fulfilling the responsibilities of father, husband, and leader. He departs to seek healing at the oracle of Apollo at Delphi. His warlike frenzy has affected his "bed", home, and city. In front of the woman he wronged, he will receive the punishment called neoptolemios tisis. The country, the countryside, is represented by a Dance of women, abandoned and subjugated.
In a reversal of the heroic Iliad, in Andromache, Euripides criticises the Greeks' arrogance and illusion of their culture's superiority. The promises of a united, strong country are denied in a landscape of decay and fear. The responsibility lies with the pioneers and those who believed them and contributed to the trivialisation of values with their tolerance. The new generation pays the price.
