The Servant of Two Masters

A landmark of world comedy

Written in 1745, “The Servant of Two Masters” is one of the most popular works of commedia dell’arte. Carlo Goldoni renewed it with a more structured narrative and multidimensional characters.

At the heart of the story is Truffaldino, a poor but cunning servant who, to ensure his food, works for two masters simultaneously without revealing his fraud to anyone. His decision leads to a sequence of twists, misunderstandings and hilarious situations, while the play comments with sarcasm and humour on corruption, hypocrisy and class contradictions.

The performance

Yiannis Kakleas, with his unique directorial intelligence, approaches the play through a modern, dynamic perspective, highlighting both its comic and social depth. His direction utilises the rhythm and physicality of commedia dell’arte, creating a frenetic, explosive performance, where love, hunger and survival are intertwined in a timeless game of power and desire.

Vasilis Charalambopoulos, with his inexhaustible talent in physical comedy and acting precision, gives life to a delightful Truffaldino and offers the audience one of his most exciting performances. At the same time, Faye Xyla adds her own unique interpretive dynamic, highlighting the delicate balance between the comic and dramatic elements of the play.

The play will tour Greece, giving the audience an enjoyable stage approach to Carlo Goldoni’s classic work.
