Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-39 Steps
Spread the word

The film that opens the club's summer season is an intelligent, entertaining, suspenseful and flawless masterpiece of Alfred Hitchcock's British period.
In The 39 Steps, based on the book by John Buchan, Canadian Richard Haney visits England. In a London music hall, he attends a performance featuring a strange man with a photographic memory. Suddenly, however, gunshots are heard and panic reigns in the theatre. Amidst the commotion, he meets a beautiful girl, Annabella, who asks for his help. Richard takes her to his apartment, and she reveals to him that she is a spy and has discovered evidence that will expose a major espionage case against England.
Directing on a tightrope of transformations, revelations, twists, and turns, Hitchcock follows the journey of his innocent hero, piecing together a virtuosity that not only benefits the narrative but also demonstrates once and for all how a story should be told.
In The 39 Steps, Alfred Hitchcock brings together, for the first time, all the elements of his incredible talent, and at the same time, provides inspiration and archetypal references to any detective story filmed to date.
