A few words about the film "Two-Three Years":
Director: Lydia Konsta | Greece, 2024, 86'
Summary: In 1960, 600,000 Greeks immigrated to Germany as workers, with the promise that their stay would be for... "Two- Three Years". Descendants of this large migration stream, Theo, Aglaia and Vaso reveal to us through their daily lives the multifaceted impacts of this migration on the present and the future. The film explores its effects on contemporary socio-political developments, highlighting the personal stories behind the historical data.
The director's perspective and the significance of the work:
Lydia Konsta's documentary escapes the nostalgia and drama of the first generation of immigrants, focusing on the second and third generations who were born and raised far from their parents' homeland. As the director herself has stated in interviews: "I don't want nostalgia and I don't want drama. Because the first generation experienced it very dramatically, I want us to see the next chapter, which is that from our difficulties, we can emerge very strong."
The film highlights the "hybrid" identity of these individuals, who move with ease between Greece and Germany, possessing an excellent knowledge of both cultures and languages. They are liberated from the narrow concept of homeland, feeling Europe as their homeland or having two homelands, which they experience as an advantage. Lydia Konsta delves into the "bond" between the two cultures, highlighting how the identity of the third generation is formed, which becomes even more universal and European. The documentary poses the existential question of "how long" we ultimately stay "foreign", when "two-three years" become a lifetime, and the dream of returning remains an illusion.
Lydia Konsta: Lydia Konsta has studied film directing and production at the Northern Media School, Sheffield Hallam University. She has participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus and directed the award-winning documentary series "Herbs Fruits of the Earth" for ERT3, as well as the anthropocentric documentary series "Akrites" for ERT.
Don't miss this vital screening that promises to provide food for thought and discussion on an issue that concerns thousands of Greek families.
