On International Women's Day (Saturday, March 8th), this Monday, March 10th, the Kalamata Creative Documentary Centre will screen Nikos Kornilios' documentary, "Matriarchy".
60 Women. 7 Days. One World.
In an abandoned warehouse that is being transformed into a shelter for abused women, 60 women from different nationalities and social classes gather to claim their space. Through seven days of cohabitation, confessions and improvisations, these women confront their personal experiences, redefine their relationship with gender and seek answers to key questions: What does matriarchy mean? Can there be victory in a gender war? How do we change the world?
Nikos Kornilios' cinematic manifesto gives women a voice to speak about sexuality, politics, violence, immigration and their place in the world. With a semi-documentary approach and neorealist aesthetics, the film records the truth and power of women's stories, challenging the viewer to reflect on the gender dynamics in our society.
Director's Note
What we call culture is a gendered culture, the culture of testosterone. Violence is everywhere. Another way of being on the planet is possible if women give all aspects of life their own imprint if they hear their own voice within themselves if they manage to distinguish it after millennia of male dominance in everything, in thought and habits, in the very language we speak every day, if beyond equality of rights, they try to find their own reason, their way of doing things, whether for social life and the ways of being together and sharing goods or for our relationship with the body and its desires, only with the feminization of civilization can there be a fundamentally different way of living together on Earth that will not be characterized by violence with the advent of MATRIARCHY and if it sounds utopian, it is nothing more than the script of a movie.
