Spread the word

Open Sculpture Workshop, held from August 23rd to September 13th, 2025, at the archaeological site of Ancient Messina during the archaeological site's opening hours, by the Urban Non-Profit Coup d´étart Company with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture, the contribution of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messina and the auspices of the Municipality of Messina.
This educational activity aims to revive and promote traditional stone carving methods in modern times. Inspired by the ancient Messenian sculptor Damophon and the later anonymous creators who were active in the region and resisting the prevailing devaluation of the role, importance and value of manual labor in plastic creation and in the art of sculpture, in particular, the workshop leaders insist on the use of traditional techniques both as a vehicle for preserving the valuable historical heritage and memory and as a dynamic tool for new, updated artistic expression. Key contributors to the workshop are the sculptor Ioannis Gouzos, the painter and sculptor Giorgis Vrachnos and the composer and musician Alexandros Mintzas.
The event's programme is interactive, and the participants' actions will form the material for an original sound installation that will be presented on the closing day of the workshop.
The workshop is free to the public. Interested parties can register to participate by calling: 690 714 9052.
