Neochori is built at the foothills of Mount Voulcano, just 2 km from Meligalas. It is 30 km from Kalamata and has about 200 permanent residents. The village was founded in 1862 by the inhabitants of nearby villages and by the village of Alonistaina in Arcadia.
In Neochori, the visitor can see the old stone school, the traditional square with the fountains, and the church of the Apostles, Peter and Paul. There is also the abandoned house of Maria Callas' father (Georgios Kalogeropoulos), who owned a pharmacy in Meligalas. The building (with only ruins of walls left) has been designated as preserved for its unique architecture.
At about 800 meters from Neochori is the historic Pigada, known from the battle of Meligalas between the resistance and the battalion guards in 1944. A colossal cross has been erected at the site, as well as a monument dedicated to those who were executed.
The most important attraction of the area is the three-headed bridge of Mavrozoumena, which was built in 369 BC. from the Theban general Epameinondas and can be seen along the road to Meligalas.
