The large seaside village of Foinikouda is located south of Lachanada, of which it is the port. Foinikouda is 10 kilometres from Methoni, 20 kilometres from Pylos and 69 from Kalamata. The name of the village comes from the red colour "foinikun", which, in antiquity, was produced after processing the purple shell.
According to local tradition, the village was founded at least in the middle of the 19th century, while, in the 1940s, residents of nearby Lachanada, who were refugees from Crete, settled there. In the period 1879-1928, the village was called "Taverna" because of the tavern that existed in the area. In fact, the tavern is known as the "Taverna of Bagasas" (Panagopoulos), who is believed to have been the first village inhabitant. In 1928, it was renamed "Lachanada Beach"; in 1930, it received its current name as "Foinikous".
Foinikouda is one of the most important tourist resorts of Messenia, while the traditional houses and the building of the Old Primary School, founded in 1925, stand out. The village's central church is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, which celebrates on August 15th with various cultural events. Finally, the homonymous beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters is at a distance of a few metres to the south of the village.
