Daiklis Road Race
The "Daiklis Road Race" takes place every summer in Manesis's semi-mountainous village, 25 kilometres from Kalamata and 20 kilometres from Ancient Messina. The race took place for the first time in 2007. Since then, it has been organised by the Local Community of Manesis, with the support of the "Messina Health Runners Association" and the "Manesi Cultural Association". The route (total length of 9 kilometres) follows the villages of Manesis-Polylofos-Kyosi Trikorfou-Chilia Spitia, ending again in the village of Manesis. Runners from all over Greece participate in the "Daiklis Road Race".
Daiclis the Messenian (or Diocles) was an athlete who became an Olympian in the stadium during the 7th Olympiad in 752 BC. The stadium event (a road of about 180 metres) was the only sport of the organisation for the first 13 Olympiads. At the same time, Daikles was the first Olympian to be crowned with the "kotino" (wreath made of a wild olive branch).
