Saint Nikolaos' Cathedral
The erection of the Cathedral in Methoni, dedicated to the patron Saint Nicholaos, started in 1833. The church was completed and inaugurated in 1839. Its imposing bell tower was inaugurated in 1912. It has been declared a worth preserving monument as a remarkable architectural example of the years after 1830 (Official Gazette 591 / B / 2005).
In the churchyard of the temple you can find the tomb of priest Dim. Grivas (1790-1863), fighter of the Revolution of 1821, politician and sergeant of the then Methoni Province. In 1825, D. Grivas was captured by the troops of Ibrahim, in April 1825, and was released in September of the same year. D. Grivas was a member of the Filiki Etaireia (Organization of friends) and a Member of the Parliament in the period 1823-1824.
The hollow, carved, wood ceiling of the temple is excellent. In its recesses, icons, which were created by the monk G. N. Andronikos during the period 1872-1833, were installed after its conservation. According to the local tradition, the monk died in Methoni immediately after the completion of the icon painting of the temple.
In the interior of the temple there are icons created in the 1930s by the local painter and hagiographer (religious painter) E. Gabriil.
