Sygros' school 1901
The "Syngrou" school, built on the Syngrou Square, is a school building of the so-called Kallias. The building is the smallest sample of this type of school building – for only one teacher - and was built in 1901. It was a school or a high school until 1963-64. Then the Methoni Parish Library was housed in the building and then a kindergarten until 1998-99. For the last few years, it has been used by the Cultural Association of Methoni .
The building presents the usual neoclassical elements, such as the vertical arrangement, with a base, main part and cornice, and the symmetrical layout of the northern facade configuration. The base consists of chipped stones that are polygonal, while on the corners and at the level of the floor they have curved edges. On the front, five stairs were built in front of the elevated entrance of the class.
Other features of the façade of the middle part of the wall and with the pediment on the cornice are the following. The tall pairs of windows on both sides also contribute to the symmetry of the façade. From the usual decorations at its edges, today, only a wide trim is left, which is turned under the cornice of the quadruple tile roof. The cornice is formed by three rows of protruding tiles of Byzantine type. On the south side, towards the courtyard, we do not see the corresponding symmetrical façade layout, but four oblong tall windows with the front door at the western side.
The building has been integrated into an ESPA programme for its restoration and will be used for cultural purposes.
At the same square, the monument of the Methonian aviator Kon. Psilolihnos, who was killed in 1943 during the bombing of the German occupation troops in Ierapetra, Crete, was erected in 2002.
