Torchlight processions are a tradition rich in symbolism, with deep roots in Ancient Greece. At the beginning of the Greek Revolution of 1821, according to tradition, the rebelling Greeks spread the message of the uprising using lit torches. The burning torch symbolises light in the darkness, the light of the rebirth of the Greek Nation against the darkness of slavery.
You are all invited to honour the struggles of our ancestors, as a reminder of the emergence from a dark period in our history, and with the hope that even today, LIGHT will prevail over darkness.
