Spread the word
The wall of Verga is located at a distance of about 7 km from the city of Kalamata, in Almyros."Verga" was the metaphorical name of the linear tambourine fort that was built at the initiative and expense of the Mani people to guard the border gate to Kalamata. In the same area there used to be a similar wall that was built for the same purpose, traces of which are not preserved.
It extends along the entire length of the Almyros ravine, from the sea to a steep and impassable mountain point near the village of Kato Selitsa. It is a battlement wall with plenty of battle holes. Its height reached 2m. It was reinforced with two fortified towers: to the west towards the sea with a square tower and to the east towards the mountain with a round "dapia" with cannon positions. The wall, which remains half-demolished today, was built to repel Ibrahim's army and prevent the submission of Mani.
The battle on June 26th and 27th, 1826, was critical as it was the first time that Ibrahim's army suffered losses.
