The free tests in Kalamata are held under the auspices of the Municipality of Kalamata and the Medical Association of Messenia, in collaboration with the Welfare Directorate-Social Assistance Department of the Municipality of Kalamata, the Association of People with Cancer Experience of Kalamata "Xanarchi-ZO" and the Diabetic Association of Messinia "Glykia Messinia".
This initiative aims to strengthen the prevention and early diagnosis of liver diseases in the elderly, who are at increased risk of developing chronic diseases, including certain forms of cancer. According to the World Health Organisation, liver cancer is the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer worldwide and the 6th most common cancer.
The ageing of the population, combined with increased risk factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and obesity, poses a serious threat to public health. Obesity in middle and old age is growing rapidly, causing serious health consequences, such as fatty liver disease and certain forms of cancer.
The "Deserve to Know Plus II" programme aims to raise public awareness and improve the health of older adults. It offers a valuable opportunity for free liver elastography.
The programme is implemented with the kind support of the TIMA Public Benefit Foundation.
