Euripides MEDEA
Spread the word
Medea. The iconic tragedy by Euripides returns this summer in a major, high-caliber production. A performance that engages with the very core of ancient tragedy, its timeless intensity and its enduring, contemporary irony.
Nikita Milivojević, an internationally acclaimed director with a deep connection to Greek literature, returns after the groundbreaking artistic experience Persians: The Journey into the Realm of Souls, presented in 2023 as part of Elefsina European Capital of Culture. This time, he approaches Medea with clarity and inner strength, illuminating the human dimension of the myth. The production remains faithful to the classical framework of the text, while allowing the undercurrents of powerful memory to permeate the action. The story unfolds as though through Medea's own recollections, like persistent images returning again and again: love, exile, children, and betrayal.
In the title role, Karyofyllia Karabeti portrays a woman who loved completely and was driven to the ultimate rupture. Alongside her, Lazaros Georgakopoulos and Aris Lebessopoulos vividly embody the conflict between love, power, and responsibility that runs through the play, while Reni Pittaki, as the Nurse, carries the voice of memory and conscience within the tragedy.
Twelve actors form a cohesive ensemble, a unified stage presence in which individual voices merge into a collective reflection of the heroine's downfall. Two musicians perform live on stage, integrated organically into the action. The live score by Dimitris Kamarotos runs throughout the performance with intensity and atmosphere, creating a soundscape that engages in dialogue with the ancient text.
Medea remains profoundly relevant today. It speaks of betrayal, exile, dignity, and the point at which a human being is crushed between love and the demands of social order. This production does not present Medea as a "monster," but rather as a conscious human being pushed to the very limits of endurance.
