Today marks 255 years since April 3rd 1770, when the hero of the Revolution, Theodoros Kolokotronis, was born in Ramovouni, in the Mila community of the Municipality of Oichalia. The Municipality of Oichalia, with established solemnity, annually commemorates the anniversary of the "Old Man of Moreas", organising brilliant events in the place where he first saw the light, the man who was destined to play a significant role in the decision of the Greeks to revolt, shaking off the Turkish yoke. A leading figure of the Greek Revolution, Kolokotronis was born 1770 on April 3rd, on Ash Monday, on a mountain, under a tree, in ancient Messenia, called Ramovounion," as he states in his memoirs, which he dictated to Georgios Tertsetis. The events organised at that exact place on Sunday, April 7th, 2025, constitute a tribute of honour and remembrance to the leader of the Struggle.
His Eminence Metropolitan of Messenia, Mr. Chrysostomos, will celebrate a Trisagion in memory of the hero at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the place where he was born and where his statue stands imposingly.
Immediately afterwards, Vasilios Bazanis, Director of the General Lyceum of Dorio and President of the Association of Philologists of Messenia, will deliver the day's eulogy.
During the event, wreaths will be laid, a minute of silence will be observed in memory of the hero of the Revolution, and the Philharmonic of the Municipality of Oichalia will play the National Anthem.
The events will conclude with the students of the Meligalas Primary School, Dimitra Tsoukala and Myrto Dokou, reciting the poem "KOLOKOTRONIS."
Every year, the colour of tradition is exceptional, with the participation of associations that will dance traditional dances.
