Folklore Museum and Lending Library at Kato Melpeia
The Folklore Museum and the parish Lending Library are housed in a privately owned building of the Evaggelistria church, in the village of Kato Melpeia (which is 40 kilometres from Kalamata and 15 kilometres from Meligala). The space, which used to function as a warehouse, is located directly opposite the central square and the village church.
The Folklore Museum and the Lending Library were inaugurated in August 2000 and the primary objective of the museum is the exhibition and preservation of the objects to preserve the history and tradition of the region.
The exhibition of the Folklore Museum is divided into six thematic sections. In the first section, visitors can see all kinds of ecclesiastical objects, while the second section consists of household objects. The third section houses agricultural tools that the residents used in the fields and the fourth section includes all the objects and tools that the women of the village used at the loom to weave. In the fifth section, the visitor can see a rich collection of old coins and banknotes, while the sixth section is made up of various family heirlooms.
The Lending Library includes five separate sections with encyclopedias, historical books, books of religious content, literary books for young and old and finally, books of scientific content.
