Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-GHOSTLIGHT

A moody and melancholic middle-aged worker struggles to cope with the recent loss of his son. As he also has to deal with the delinquent behaviour of his intelligent but unruly teenage daughter, he sinks deeper into anger and loneliness until, coincidentally, he gets involved with an amateur theatre group rehearsing near the construction site where he works, staging Romeo and Juliet.
Bearing the signature of the duo who gave us the unforgettable Saint Frances five years ago, GHOSTLIGHT defines independent cinema. Shot with extreme austerity and driven by a meticulously studied script full of memorable lines, the film tells a bittersweet story of reconciliation and overcoming trauma through the mythical power of art, acceptance and contact with our emotions. It is also a low-key ode to the most mysterious, misunderstood institution of humanity for millennia: the family. The fact that the three main protagonists – father, mother and daughter, all excellent performers – are family in real life gives the film a feeling that will not leave anyone indifferent.
GHOSTLIGHT is a fantastic, rare film that celebrates compassion, the healing process and the wound of grief. It won the Audience Award at the recent Thessaloniki Festival.
