"Thamyris" Valyra Cultural Association
The "Thamyris" Valyra Cultural Association was founded in 1981 and since then has been actively participating in all the cultural events of the region. Every year, it organises traditional dance classes for all ages, shadow theatre performances, educational excursions, musical evenings, as well as sporting events such as the "Valyreia". Also, the Association has created its own theatre group, thus contributing to promoting local culture.
Thamyris (or Thamyras) was a legendary poet, musician and singer. According to Homer (Iliad, B, 595) and tragic poet Euripides, he came from Thrace. According to tradition, he was the son of musician Philammon and nymph Argiope. At the same time, according to another version, he was the son of Aethlios, and his mother was Muse Melpomene or Erato. Lino, the creator of melody and rhythm, taught Thamyris the art of music. Finally, he wrote and set to music a "Theogony", a "Cosmogony", and a "Titanomachia" (war of the Titans against the gods).
